Here
is a rather tattered "screwboot adapter"
on a Northern
Lites Elite snowshoe.
Its function is to protect your snowshoe deck from
what would certainly be a short and brutal life if
a boot encrusted with many sharp screws were to regularly
come in contact with it.
I am using 5/8" thick high density EVA foam from
some leftover interlocking
floor tiles that I had lying about. To make them,
I trace the boots and cut the pieces 1/2" bigger
than the outline.
This particular specimen is crudely fastened with
a piece of copper wire that passes through the center
of the rivets that bind the front of the crampon to
the decking. Some type of small gauge stainless cabling
would probably be a better choice,as the copper become
brittle and breaks from all the flexing.
The foam panels provide an extra layer of cushioning
and insulation, which are nice bonuses. They take
quite a bit of abuse from the screws and will require
changing every 20 miles or so.
