Left to right: A Kold Kutter 1/2" screw, a conventional
sheet metal screw, and a 1/4" hex drive bit.

A screwgun or variable speed drill is the easiest way to install them. There is no need to pre-drill, just zip them right in. For best results, run the screws in until they contact the boot sole, then hand tighten with a 1/4" wrench until they feel snug. The screws can be removed later with very little effect on the boot sole. I use the 1/2" length screws - when installing them, try to keep the heads at least 1/2" from the edge of the boot to avoid shredding gaiters or windpants. A dab of "Shoo-Goo" on the threads may help retain the screws under hard use.
To make crampon-compatible screwboots, attach your crampon and see where you can sink screws in a manner that will give you traction without interfering with putting the crampon on the field. I try to make sure the screws are at least 1/8" away from any frame parts. Some crampon frames may cover so much of the boot that using screws may be impractical.
